Croatia Dubrovnik Europe

Best itinerary for Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is a treasure trove of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery that your family will remember for years to come. With its medieval walls, shimmering Adriatic views, and charming Old City, our family was mesmerized for days – adults and kids alike. Here’s our guide to making the most of three magical days in Dubrovnik.

Day 1: Settling Into the Old City

Stay Inside the Old City To truly immerse yourself in Dubrovnik’s charm, book accommodations within the Old City walls. We stayed here in the middle of summer tourism season — and were worried about the crowds. The best way to experience this city is to stay IN the old city (don’t just visit mid-day when everyone else is!) You will experience it in a way the most people don’t and if you’re like us, you’ll be dreaming of returning again and again. Keep in mind — no cars are not allowed inside, so there is some mild effort of walking your luggage through its marble streets—likely navigating a few stairs—but its worth it (and roller bags work well here, actually, unlike cobblestone streets in other older areas in Europe). Early mornings and evenings here are enchanting, with quiet streets and soft lighting creating a magical atmosphere. This is where we stayed, perfectly located right in the middle of the Old City closer to the Ploce Gate than the busier Pile Gate. We absolutely LOVED it and would recommend staying there.

Explore the Stradun Start your visit with a leisurely walk along the Stradun, the Old City’s main street. This polished limestone thoroughfare is perfect for soaking in the city’s ambiance and getting your bearings. Stop for a coffee at one of the many charming cafes and watch the city come to life.

Game of Thrones Highlights For fans of the hit series Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik is a dream come true. Visit the iconic steps of the Walk of Shame and the Rector’s Palace, both key filming locations. Consider joining a guided Game of Thrones tour for insider trivia and to see even more filming spots.

Dinner with a View Wrap up your day with dinner at Rudjer, a family-friendly restaurant known for its delicious seafood and cozy atmosphere. Located in a quiet corner of the Old City, it’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy authentic Croatian flavors.

Day 2: Walking the Walls and Beyond

Dubrovnik Pass Purchase a Dubrovnik Pass to streamline your visit. This handy card provides access to many museums and includes a one-time entry to the famous City Walls.

City Walls Walk Dedicate your morning or late afternoon to walking the City Walls. For the best experience, start about 45 minutes before sunset. The lighting is incredible, the crowds thinner, and watching the sun dip below the horizon from this vantage point is unforgettable. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, as the walk can be strenuous.

Discover Museums and Monasteries Use the Dubrovnik Pass to explore cultural gems like the Cultural History Museum inside the Rector’s Palace or the Maritime Museum. Another must-visit is the Franciscan Monastery, home to a beautiful cloister and one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe. These stops provide fascinating insights into the city’s rich history.

Evening Gelato Stroll After dinner, treat the family to some gelato. With numerous shops offering a wide variety of flavors, it’s the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration.

Day 3: Adventures by the Sea

Buza Bar and Cliff Diving For the adventurous in your family, head to Buza Bar. Tucked away through a small hole in the city wall, this spot offers breathtaking views and the chance to swim or even try cliff diving into the crystal-clear Adriatic. It’s a thrilling experience and a great way to cool off.

Lokrum Island and the Blue Cave Hop on a ferry to Lokrum Island, just a 15-minute ride from Dubrovnik. This lush oasis offers hiking trails, a saltwater lagoon, and peacocks roaming freely. For an unforgettable sea adventure, arrange a snorkeling trip to the Blue Cave, where you can explore underwater wonders and admire the vibrant blue hues created by the sunlight filtering through the water.

Final Evening in the Old City Spend your last evening soaking up the atmosphere of the Old City. Take one final walk along the Stradun, marvel at the illuminated city walls, and savor a family dinner at a cozy restaurant. Reflect on your adventures and begin planning your next trip back to this incredible destination.

Tips for Families:

  • Pack Light: Navigating the Old City with wheeled luggage is manageable, but fewer bags make the journey easier.
  • Stay Hydrated: Especially during summer, Dubrovnik can get quite warm.
  • Plan Ahead: The Dubrovnik Pass is invaluable but plan your wall walk strategically since it’s a one-time use.
  • Indulge in Gelato: A sweet treat for all ages and a staple of any Dubrovnik adventure.

Dubrovnik’s mix of history, stunning vistas, and unique experiences ensures a memorable getaway for the whole family. Whether wandering medieval streets, diving into the Adriatic, or savoring delicious gelato, this city will capture your heart.
