5 Days in Naxos travel itinerary
Choosing the best Greek island is hard! But Naxos stands out as one of the best for family travel for many reasons. It is the largest island in the Cyclades, and one of the least touristed offering the perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and family-friendly activities. Unlike some of the more popular, and crowded Greek islands, Naxos maintains a laid-back atmosphere with pristine beaches, charming villages, and an abundance of outdoor adventures. Its diverse landscapes, from sandy beaches to rugged mountains, make it an ideal destination for families looking to explore and enjoy a variety of experiences. The island’s welcoming locals and delicious cuisine further enhance its appeal, ensuring that every member of the family will have a memorable and enjoyable vacation. Below is how our family enjoyed five days in Naxos over summer break. Steal our itinerary!
Day 1: Arrival and Agios Prokopios Beach
Arrival in Naxos
We arrived by ferry from Athens. It took roughly 5 hours. There is also an airport on Naxos.
Where to Stay: Agios Prokopios Beach
We loved this beach area, which offers many hotel accomodations and is perfectly located to enjoy the island’s offerings.
HOTEL RECOMMENDATION: We stayed at Hotel Francesca. This was a budget-friendly hotel that had a cool guitar-shaped pool (like the movie Coco) which the kids loved! Our unit had two rooms – one for the kids and one for us, connected by a small kitchenette and bathroom. It has a private balcony with patio table for dining and drying rack for swimsuits and towels.
Getting around:
We are a huge fans of motor scooters! Of course, if that’s not your thing, the public buses are very comfortable, and you can also rent a car. For scooter rentals, you likely do not need a motorcycle license to rent a scooter that is 50cc or less, however for more powerful scooters above 50cc, be sure to have motorcycle qualification and an International Drivers License (in addition to bringing your state license). EU residents won’t likely require an international drivers license.

Afternoon: Relax at Agios Prokopios Beach
Spend the afternoon enjoying the beautiful Agios Prokopios Beach. The golden sand and crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
Rent sunbeds and umbrellas for a comfortable beach day.
Evening: Sunset Dinner on the Beach
In the evening several restaurants move their tables onto the beach where diners can enjoy the beach and sunset over dinner.

Day 2: Exploring the Southern Beaches
Morning: Rent Scooters for Island Exploration
Head south to explore the beautiful beach towns.
Afternoon: Beach Hopping

Visit Plaka Beach, known for its long stretch of sandy shoreline.
Continue to Agia Anna Beach for a more secluded experience.
Watch kite surfing at Parthena Beach, a popular spot for water sports.
Explore Hawaii Beach and Kastraki Beach, which offer wide, sandy beaches with plenty of space even during the summer.
Check out the graffiti-adorned ruins of a failed hotel development from the 1950s in Alyko. Be cautious and keep kids close as there are areas where the floors have crumbled and metal is sticking out. This is definitely worth a peek for the fantastic street art.
Evening: Return to Agios Prokopios
Head back to Agios Prokopios and enjoy dinner at a local taverna like Spiros Restaurant.
Day 3: Northern Adventure and Mountain Villages
Morning: Travel to Northern Naxos
Ride your scooters to the northern end of the island, which is more arid and rugged, offering a rustic and less touristy experience.
Visit the seaside fishing village of Apollonas for lunch. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of the local tavernas and some beach time.
Afternoon: Explore Apeiranthos Village
Stop by the mountain village of Apeiranthos, known for its authentic stone towers, old houses, churches, and marble alleys.
Visit one of the five museums in Apeiranthos to learn about the local culture and history.
Evening: Dinner with a View
Have dinner at the Rotunda restaurant. Enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape as you dine on traditional Naxian dishes.
Day 4: Go Sailing OR Day Trip to Paros Island
We had planned a day of sailing, snorkeling and enjoying exploration of the small islands near Naxos by catamaran or sailboat – but the seas had a different idea for us that day. With rough water, our sailing excursion was cancelled. This can happen so it’s great to have a back-up plan. We decided to take a ferry to the island of Paros instead.
Try sailing and exploring beaches and the crystal clear water by boat
Morning: Take a ferry to Paros Island
The ferry ride is about 45 minutes
Once in Paros, rent scooters or use public transit to explore the island.
Morning: Discover Lefkes Village
Visit Lefkes Village in central Paros, known for its classic whitewashed buildings, bright blue doors, stunning flowers, and cobblestone streets.
Enjoy lunch at a local taverna in Lefkes.
Afternoon: Beach Time at Kolibithres
Spend some time at Kolibithres Beach, famous for its unique rock formations and clear waters.
Head back to the ferry terminal and return to Naxos.
Day 5: Naxos Town and Sunset at Temple of Apollo
Morning: Explore the Old Market

Head to the Old Market in Naxos Town near the harbor. Browse through the shops, pick up souvenirs, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Have lunch at a local café in the market area.
Afternoon: Relax and Prepare for Departure
Spend the afternoon relaxing at Agios Prokopios Beach or at your hotel.
Evening: Sunset at Temple of Apollo

Walk to the iconic Portara, the massive marble doorway of the ancient Temple of Apollo. It’s especially beautiful at sunset, offering stunning views and great photo opportunities.
Enjoy a farewell dinner at a waterfront taverna, savoring your last moments on this beautiful island.
Final Tips:
Naxos’s southern beaches are wide and sandy, and even in the middle of summer, you can find beaches nearly to yourself.
Always have sun protection and stay hydrated.
Embrace the local culture and try as many traditional dishes as possible.
Exercise caution when exploring ruins and unfamiliar areas to ensure safety.
Enjoy your family adventure on the beautiful island of Naxos!

I am sure that your dad is in heaven watching you be the most awesome mother to the grandchildren he never met, I am so impressed and proud of you and how you are raising your kids. I hope that when you come to Cincinnati, I will get a chance to meet your kids.

I’m so incredibly touched by your sweet message! I often think about my dad and how much I wish he was still here. I know he is looking down from heaven with pride. Next time we’re in Cincinnati, we will definitely come by! Would love to see you again, and have Kaelan and Siena meet my other mother! I feel like I was at your house more than my own most of my teenage years 🙂 Love you, Mrs. Daniels!
